Baseball Sweeps Wiley on Opening Day

ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University baseball team swept a doubleheader against Wiley University, 9-0 and 4-3.

"It was a good day of baseball," LSUA Head Coach Kody Gautreaux said. "Anytime we get to get out here and play a quality opponent like Wiley, we are very excited to do that. First game, we were able to score some runs and put it away, our pitching staff did a great job. Game two was a struggle, a grind. We didn't play our best baseball but Cowan was able to give us a chance to score some runs and get back into the game."

GAME ONE | LSUA 9, WILEY 0
Carter Fabre (1-0) tossed six innings out shutout ball in the Generals' (2-0) season opener and the offense exploded for a nine-run second inning.

Fabre allowed just one hit and three walks over six innings. He struck out five and forced seven ground outs.

Lane Patin and Cade LaBruyere recorded a hit, two runs batted in, and a run scored each. Evan Rohlfs-Schdel went 2-for-2 with an RBI. The Generals finished with six hits and eight walks drawn.

Nick Rodriguez (0-1) was charged with the loss. He went one-plus innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, on three hits and five walks.

A pair of walks to Cayden McCollough and Brett Batteford opened the bottom of the second. Rohlfs-Schadel then reached on what was a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error allowed him to reach base.

Landon Langley pulled a single through the left side to score McCollough for the first run of the game. Patin followed suit with a single to center, driving in Batteford and Colin Ardoin – who ran for Rohlfs-Schadel.

LaBruyere singled two batters later, after Lane Kratzer drew a walk, to drive in a pair. After Judge Boudreaux loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, back-to-back balks forced across two more LSUA runs.  An error later in the inning allowed Boudreaux to score, before Rohlfs-Schadel laced an RBI single to right center and a 9-0 lead.

Seth Leger finished the game for LSUA. He struck out one in the game's final inning.

GAME TWO | LSUA 4, WILEY 3
LaBruyere drove in the winning run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh and Jack Cowan (1-0) recorded his first win as a General.

Cowan tossed four innings of no-hit relief. He struck out seven on 57 pitches.

Joshua Tinnerello recorded a pair of hits, while Blake Moss, Trevor Dooley, and LaBruyere each recorded a hit.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with an RBI double from Tyson Minter in the first. A throwing error on the play allowed a second run to cross the plate. Cameron McCoy reached on a throwing error in the second, which allowed Xavier Sosa to score for a 3-0 Wiley lead.

Ethan Jones (0-1) held the Generals to one run through six innings. He allowed four hits, four earned runs, four walks, and six strikeouts over six-plus.

LSUA's first run came in the third on a sacrifice fly from Patin.

Dooley led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side. Moss came up as a pinch hitter and doubled down the left field line to put runners on the corners. A single from Tinnerello drove home Dooley, to cut the score to 3-2, and move Moss to third.

Kaiden Resendez came on in relief for the Wildcats. He recorded the inning's first out on a sacrifice bunt by Patin, moving Tinnerello to second and driving in Moss to tie the game.

Kratzer saw two pitches before being intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. LaBruyere drove a pitch up the middle for an RBI single and walk-off win.
