HOBBS, NEW MEXICO – Louisiana State University of Alexandria baseball's
Dalton Wilson made history in the series finale against the University of the Southwest (N.M.), hitting for the cyle in a 15-10 victory.
Wilson's cycle is the third in program history and the first since Josh Bell completed the feat against Clarke on March 5, 2012.
After being hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance, Wilson laced a triple to center in the second inning, knocking out the (usually) hardest portion of the feat. He then singled to right in the fourth. In the eighth, Wilson notched a double – leaving only a home run left to complete. In the ninth, Wilson came back to the plate and lifted a ball deep to center field. It caromed off the wall, allowing Wilson to race around the bases for an inside the park home run to complete the cycle.
LSUA (19-9, 8-4 RRAC) jumped out to an early advantage, scoring five runs in the opening inning. Cade LaBruyere scored the game's first run on a wild pitch before
Landon Langley delivered a two-RBI single to right field that brought home Wilson and
Trevor Dooley.
Lane Kratzer later crossed the plate, and
Fischer Einkauf added a sacrifice fly to give the Generals an early 5–0 lead.
Southwest (8-20, 3-8 RRAC) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, but the Generals extended their lead in the second inning with three more runs to move in front 8–3.
After several scoreless innings, the Mustangs scored a run in the sixth inning, two runs in the seventh, and another one in the eighth to close the score gap.
The Generals responded in the top of the eighth when Dooley singled through the right side to drive in
Colin Ardoin. Later in the inning, Kratzer singled to second base, bringing home Wilson and Dooley to extend the lead.
Another four runs were added in the ninth for the Generals. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but LSUA held on to secure the 15–10 victory.
Carter Fabre (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Generals after pitching 6.2 innings, striking out five of the 33 batters faced and allowing six runs.
The Generals host William Carrey for a midweek game and Texas College for a three game series over the weekend.
