ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria notched a 67-59 win over Texas College in Red River Athletic Conference play.
Sydney Person led the Generals (10-12, 9-8 RRAC) with 24 points. She knocked down eight buckets and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
Justice Young recorded 10 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
Kelly Norris also tallied 10 points.
Reese Stephens dished out seven assists. LSUA recorded 22 points in the paint, 20 points off turnovers, and 18 second chance points.
"Every time you play Texas College it's always a battle," LSUA Head Coach Billy Perkins said. "They're always really scrappy. I'm very proud of us."
Jakairi Blacknell (14), Rakia Lee (12), and Keirea Jackson (11) all finished with 10 or more points for the Steers (8-14, 6-10 RRAC).
The Generals led for 83.5-percent of the contest and held Texas College to 5:05 with the lead.
LSUA started out with a 5-0 run over the first 2:14 before the Steers found the scoreboard with a three from Lee. The Generals held a slim lead throughout the first quarter, going up by six on a three from Stephens, before another trey from Lee in the final 75 seconds made it 14-11 in favor of LSUA at the end of the period.
The Generals continued to keep a narrow lead in the second quarter's first seven minutes until a layup from Blacknell tied it at 24-24. A layup from Titerria Byburn on the Steers' ensuing possession flipped the lead to Texas College, 26-24 headed into halftime.
The Steers went ahead by four, 28-24, in the early seconds of the third with a layup from Lee. Back-to-back jumpers from Norris and Person levelled the game at 28-28 before a jumper from Person put LSUA back ahead. Their lead was brief, however, as Taryanna McNary knocked down a three to put Texas College ahead 31-30. Buckets from LSUA's Persona and TC's Jackson negated each other as TC led 33-32 with 5:34 left in the third.
A trey from Norris and a four-point play from
Addison Walker on consecutive possessions gave the Generals a 39-33 lead midway through the third.
Blair Smith then extended the Generals' lead to 42-35 with a three a few possessions later. She knocked down a free throw with 1:30 left in the period to push the lead to eight.
Four free throws from the Steers cut the Generals' lead to four, 43-39, headed into the fourth quarter.
LSUA opened the fourth with a 9-0 run, extending their lead to 11 and never looked back.
The Generals take on Jarvis Christian University on Saturday, February 7, at 1:00 PM for Senior Day.
