ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria staged a second half comeback to take down Xavier University (La.), 65-60.
"Anytime Xavier comes in, it's tough to get a win against them," LSUA Head Coach Billy Perkins said. "Coach Bo [Browder] does a great job over there. Their defense is tenacious. For us to come out on top at the end, is a testament to our girls.
Sydney Person led the Generals (9-10, 8-6 RRAC) with 16 points. The Houston, Texas native finished 7-for-10 from the field.
Addison Walker finished with 14 points and knocked down four shots from long range. Nine of Walker's points came in the second half. She also led LSUA with seven rebounds.
Kelly Norris dished out a team-high seven assists. The Generals recorded 28 points in the paint, 11 points off turnovers, and 12 second chance points.
Laila Sigure led the Gold Nuggets (10-8, 7-6 RRAC) with 15 points. She was 4-for-7 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. She also recorded a team-high eight rebounds.
The first quarter was not kind to the Generals. Xavier took a nine-point through five minutes, 11-2, and it wasn't until seven minutes into the quarter the Generals recorded their first basket. The second quarter also went in favor of the Gold Nuggets, 21-17, to send Xavier into the halftime break with a 37-28 lead.
A three to open the scoring in the third quarter from Xavier's Ryli Martin gave the Gold Nuggets a 12-point advantage early in the third.
Walker responded with back-to-back three's cutting the deficit in half, 46-34. After a pair of free throws from XULA's Jala Williams, a layup from Person and another three from Walker made it a three-point game, 42-39, with 4:37 left in the third.
Blair Smith knocked down a pair of free throws to cut it to a one-point game and a three from
Reese Stephens gave the Generals their first lead of the contest, 44-42, with 3:11 left in the third.
A jumper from McKayle Price and free throws from Norris pushed the advantage to six, 46-42. Xavier closed the period on a 6-0 run over the final two minutes, sending the game to the final stanza tied, 48-48.
The Generals and Gold Nuggets traded points for much of the game's final period. A three from Tiarra Tillison with 2:46 remaining in regulation gave XULA a 58-57 lead.
Justice Young picked up a layup in the paint to swing the score line back in favor of LSUA, 59-58. Person added a layup for a three-point lead, 61-58, with 1:45 left.
Fatima Black cut the Generals' lead to one, 61-60 with 50 seconds left in regulation with a layup, but free throws from Person gave the Generals a smidgen of breathing room.
On Xavier's final possession, Stephens pick pocketed Yara Bou Harb and raced the court for a layup to seal the victory for LSUA.
LSUA out scored XULA 37-23 in the second half.
The Generals are on the road against Texas A&M-Texarkana and LSU Shreveport next week.
